Where Austria Meets Italy on the Slopes: Nassfeld – Probably the most Underrated Austrian Ski Area

Every now and then you find a mountain destination that just clicks. For me, that place is Nassfeld, a ski resort in the sunny south of Austria that delivers more than just great snow — it gives you variety, crowds that aren’t overwhelming, and food worth planning around. I shot an amazing drone video here last year (you’ll find it embedded above 👆), and honestly, I could watch that sunrise footage on loop.

Why Nassfeld Works for Skiers & Snowboarders

Nassfeld isn’t the biggest resort in the Alps, but it feels huge in all the right ways. The area boasts over 110 km of groomed slopes that span blues, reds and blacks — and with 29 modern lifts you can cover it all without retracing your steps unless you want to.

What I really appreciate is the variety: there are gentle cruisers perfect for warming up, fun red runs with plenty of space to carve, and steeper terrain if you’re after a challenge. Couple that with reliable sunshine — this region gets significantly more sun hours than many northern Alpine resorts — and you have powder days that are bright, warm, and just plain fun.

On top of the slopes, the lift infrastructure is modern and fast. Whether it’s the Millennium Express or the sleek new chairlifts, moving around the mountain feels effortless compared with a few other places I’ve skied.

Food, Views and Apres-Ski

Let’s be honest: world-class skiing is one thing, but great food on the mountain makes a day perfect. Nassfeld delivers here too. There are numerous mountain huts and restaurants with excellent regional food -think rich Austrian classics but also Italian-influenced dishes thanks to the proximity to Italy. Numerous gourmets spots are literally slope-side, so you can lunch with a view and head back out without missing much.

And the vibe between runs? Chill-but-lively. Lots of sunny terraces, loungers and spots to sip a local beer while watching the alpenglow hit the peaks.

What to Do at Nassfeld in the Summer

Nassfeld isn’t just a winter destination. It switches gears in summer with the same kind of laid-back energy that makes it great in winter.

The surrounding Carnic Alps GeoPark is a fascinating playground of waterfalls, serene lakes, and dramatic ravines. You can explore geology trails, learn about how these mountains formed, and enjoy some serious scenery.

Outdoor Adventures

⛰️ Hiking & Biking
There’s no shortage of trails – from easy valley paths to panoramic alpine routes – plus mountain biking routes that range from scenic family rides to more technical singletrack.

🚡 Summer Lifts & Views
Take the summer cable cars up for lunch or a sunset stroll without breaking a sweat. On clear days, the views of the Gailtal valley and surrounding peaks are jaw dropping.

🏞️ Lakes & Water Fun
Nearby lakes like Pressegger See and Weissensee are perfect for cooling off – swim, kayak, or just picnic by the shore. Water temperatures in summer can get surprisingly warm.

Beyond Nature

Just a short drive from the resort, there’s Garnitzenklamm Gorge – a popular natural attraction with a dramatic gorge path and waterfalls that make for great photos or a refreshing afternoon hike.

There are also quaint villages, local museums, and cultural spots around Hermagor if you want a slower day off the trails.

Why I Keep Coming Back

What keeps me returning to Nassfeld – aside from having a holiday apartment not far from – is this: you get excellent skiing, modern, efficient lifts, exceptional food, and outdoor fun year-round without that overly crowded “tourist factory” vibe you find in some other Alpine hotspots. Summer’s green, cool and packed with options; winter is sunny, snowy, and genuinely fun whether you’re cruising blues or chasing powder laps. Can’t wait do shoot a summer video as well.

Whether you’re here for a long weekend or a whole season, Nassfeld feels like a place you can settle into. And trust me – that drone footage only scratches the surface.
