In the summer of 2023, we set off on a Scandinavian road trip that took us through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the North. Among the highlights were two places that left a lasting impression on me: Kvaløya and Sommarøy, just outside Tromsø in Northern Norway.
These two destinations are often overshadowed by the popularity of Tromsø itself, but they offer raw, untamed Arctic beauty and plenty of activities for travelers who love nature, the sea, and a touch of solitude.
Kvaløya – The “Whale Island”
Kvaløya, meaning “Whale Island” in Norwegian, is one of Norway’s largest islands. Its rugged mountains, deep fjords, and quiet fishing villages make it a paradise for outdoor lovers.
Things to Do on Kvaløya
- Hiking: Trails like Brosmetinden and Ersfjordtraversen offer panoramic views over the fjords and peaks.
- Wildlife Watching: Depending on the season, you can spot whales, seals, or seabirds along the coast.
- Kayaking: Paddle through calm fjords surrounded by towering mountains.
- Northern Lights or Midnight Sun: In winter, Kvaløya is a prime spot for aurora hunting. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the island in endless light.

Sommarøy – The Arctic Caribbean
A short drive west of Kvaløya lies Sommarøy, a fishing village famous for its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. On a sunny day, it feels almost like the Caribbean—only the sharp Arctic air reminds you that you’re still in Norway.
Things to Do on Sommarøy
- Beach Walks: Explore beaches like Sommarøystranda with stunning views of small islets dotting the sea.
- Boat Trips & Fishing: The village has a long fishing tradition, and you can join local tours.
- Photography: Sommarøy’s landscapes are pure magic for photographers—especially when the light lingers for hours during the Arctic summer.
- Relaxation: Unlike busier parts of Norway, Sommarøy feels peaceful and remote, perfect for simply slowing down.
Getting There
If you’re flying in, Tromsø Airport is the closest entry point. From Tromsø, it’s just a short drive—about 30 minutes to Kvaløya and around an hour to Sommarøy. This makes both places perfect for day trips or a couple of nights away from the city.
Final Thoughts
Visiting Kvaløya and Sommarøy on my 2023 Scandinavian road trip was a reminder of why I love the North: raw nature, wide open spaces, and the feeling of being at the edge of the world. Whether you’re after hiking, wildlife, or just stunning views, these two Arctic gems are worth adding to your itinerary.
